A Conversation With the Author and Illustrator of the Book Carmelita

Author Meagan O’Toole Pitts and illustrator Ashton Kaleigh, both El Paso natives, speak with Dr. Jose Velasquez, Director of ESC19’s Academic Instruction and School Support Department (AISS), about their book Carmelita, aimed specifically for 5th grade readers. The book tells the tale of the protest about the harsh treatment of Mexicans at El Paso bathhouses in 1917 from the perspective of a girl who is 5 years old in the present day. In addition to discussing the creation of the book, the topic of biliteracy and bilingualism is discussed as a reflection of local culture.

ESC19 Professional Development Consultant Silvia Zacarias discusses early literacy skills in children with Dr. Barbara Culatta. She is a professor emerita of Communication Disorders at Brigham Young University. Barbara is PI on the Systematic and Engaging Early Literacy project, housed at BYU, which supports a website (education.byu.edu/seel) and iPad app (Hideout). She relies on play, story enactment, hands-on experiences, and instructional conversations as contexts for enhancing language and literacy skills in young children.

Carol Salva is an award-winning educator with proven success working with unschooled/under-schooled, multilingual learners classified as SLIFE (Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education) or ELD (English Language Development) students. She is a key Seidlitz Education consultant for training, coaching, modeling, and supporting program leaders. Dr. Carol Salva is a co-author of Boosting Achievement: Reaching Students with Interrupted or Minimal Education and a co-author of DIY PD: A Guide to Self-Directed Learning for Educators of Multilingual Learners. She has taught elementary, middle and high school.
